Introduction

Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Waste Management (WM) was the leading provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America. WM served municipal, commercial, industrial and residential customers throughout USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. The company was organized into seven Operating Groups, collectively referred to as North American Solid Waste (NASW). Five of the seven groups were geographically grouped (the Canadian, Eastern, Midwest, Southern and Western Groups), while the other two groups were functionally grouped (the Wheelabrator and Recycling Groups). The NASW operations provided integrated waste management services.

1] Americans generate trash at a rate of four pounds per day per person, which translates to 600,000 tons per day or 210 million tons per year. This is almost twice as much trash per person as most other major countries. Some of this trash gets recycled or recovered and some is burned, but the majority is buried in landfills, places dug up in wastelands far from cities.
